Meet Our Instructors
Anne-Marie Berens
Anne-Marie Berens started dancing with the Granfling School of Highland Dance when she was 8 years old. She grew up performing and competing across the country at the Premier level. She received her Members teaching certification from the BATD in the Highland branch in 2017 and in the Scottish National branch in 2024. She is also a member of ScotDance USA. While in college, Anne-Marie was co-president of the William & Mary Celtic Dance club, where she danced, taught, and choreographed Highland, Irish, and cèilidh dancing. She was also a member of the Highland Fusion display team at the University of St. Andrews. Anne-Marie currently serves as on the ScotDance USA Professional Development Committee and as the Highland Dance Chair for the Virginia Scottish Games Association.
Amy Jenkins
Amy Jenkins began Highland dancing with the Granfling School of Highland Dance in 2011 as an adult. She had extensive prior dance experience, including classical ballet training. After reaching the premier level in competition, she earned her Members teaching certification through the BATD in 2016. She is also a member of ScotDance USA. Amy is also very interested in traditional Scottish music and its relationship to dancing. She plays the fiddle, viola, and bodhrán, and used to be part of a Celtic pub band.
Amy Shields
Amy Shields joined Granfling School of Highland Dance in 2013 as an adult, where she learned Highland dance for the first time as an adult. Growing up, she had some experience dancing for show choir and musical theater. Since beginning Highland, Amy has performed and competed across the country and especially in the mid-Atlantic region. In 2022, she received her Members teaching certification with the BATD. She is also a member of ScotDance USA. She has a special interest in creating original choreography for performances as well as competition and is our acting liaison to the Washington Scottish Pipe Band. Amy especially loves working with adult dancers and helping expose new people to Scottish dance!
